Bee Photos as Art References
Contents

Intro
Over the years, a few artists have reached out to ask whether they could use my bee photographs as references for their artwork. It is always exciting to see how someone interprets a photograph in a completely different medium.
Here are some of the works they have created.
2025

Another beautiful work from Anne Scanlon who also started to do close up photography of native bees.
2024

Brisbane based artist, Anne Scanlon made two beautiful artwork based on my blue banded bee & leaf cutter bee shots.
2022

Australia-based artist Sarai Meyerink created this beautiful piece based on my photograph of an Amegilla (Asaropoda), commonly known as a teddy bear bee.
2021
Artist Lauren Broughton painted this piece using my photograph of an Amegilla bee, commonly known as a blue-banded bee, as a reference.
2020
A special shout-out to Masher Designs for creating this very cool mural at Yeppoon State High School in Queensland.
Masher Designs also used one of my photographs as a reference for a native bee mural at a primary school in Rockhampton. The project also involved CQ Native Bees.
It is a good reminder that even a photograph I may not consider one of my best can still be useful as a reference for an amazing art project.
Sydney-based mosaic artist Christine, also known as Birds Bees and Patron, created a collection of works based on my photographs of native stingless bees from 2020. Her former Instagram account, Birds Bees and Patron, is no longer active, but I have kept the link here as a record of the original page.
She was also kind enough to send one of the pieces to me. Thank you, Christine!
It has been wonderful to see my photographs take on a new life through paintings, murals and mosaics. Please take some time to look at the artists’ other work as well.
